A Statement on the Ukraine Crisis

Russian and Ukrainian Flags

I am writing on behalf of the staff of The Insurgent on the matter of the current crisis in the Donbass region of Ukraine. We, at The Insurgent, are opposed to imperialist wars of aggression, no matter which imperial power is instigating. We stand in solidarity with the workers of Ukraine and Russia both, who are held hostage by corrupt and oligarchic governments, and in particular the workers of the Donbass, who have had their lives uprooted by nearly a decade of war. Russia is continuing their colonialist project in the region as they have been since the days of Tsarism, and that is something we are vehemently opposed to. We are not in favor of sanctions, but even less so in favor of NATO intervention. We remain skeptical of many of the claims of the U.S. State Department, which has been known to fabricate narratives in the pursuit of shoring up support for the military-industrial complex, from Vietnam to Afghanistan to today still. We also remain skeptical of the claims of the Russian Federation, which has not been above instigating false flag attacks to provide a casus belli in the past, as in the events preceding the Second Chechen War.

Indeed, war benefits no one good, especially not the international left. Both Russia and America bolster far-right groups, and leftism in particular poses the greatest threat to their established orders. A worst case scenario here is not that a third world war comes to pass (which is nigh unlikely given NATO’s current refusal to deploy combat forces) but that fascists the world over flock to the conflict to gain combat experience, and return home to make use of it against their enemies. They have already been doing so with the Ukrainian neo-nazi Azov Battalion, and this escalation may draw them in by greater numbers than ever seen before. Foucault’s boomerang holds true yet.

We stand for solidarity between peoples, we stand for peace among nations. But as the hope of a simple resolution seems to fade, we must steel ourselves for the likely events ahead. Now more than ever is the time for community resiliency. Reach out, organize. Resist imperialism, in all its forms.

Solidarity forever, from The Insurgent, to all corners of the world.
